Trapl

Austria · Carnuntum

Johannes Trapl’s rise from a single half-hectare of family vines to one of Austria’s most influential winegrowers mirrors his role in redefining Carnuntum itself. Choosing wine over a secure career in California, Trapl embraced a radically different vision for a region known for powerful, modern Zweigelt, instead pursuing freshness, purity, and terroir expression—most notably through Blaufränkisch from the long-forgotten limestone slopes of the Spitzerberg. His breakthrough came immediately, when his first 2004 Blaufränkisch was named varietal wine of the year by Falstaff, launching him as a leader of Austria’s natural wine movement. Today, Trapl farms roughly 15 hectares, all Demeter-certified biodynamic, with an obsessive focus on living soils, cover crops, and low alcohol as the clearest lens for terroir. In both vineyard and cellar, his “no-nonsense added” philosophy—spontaneous fermentations, no fining or filtration, minimal sulfur—yields nuanced, age-worthy wines that have reshaped perceptions of Carnuntum and secured Trapl’s place at the forefront of modern Austrian wine.
