In 1972, with a $5,000 loan and 35 cases stacked on the floor, a writer and musician opened a shop in Berkeley. Five decades later Kermit Lynch is a retailer, distributor and national importer of authentic wines that express their terroir, with two James Beard awards and France's Légion d'Honneur to show for it. He championed unfiltered bottlings and refrigerated shipping long before either was standard practice.
