The Karamolegos’ winery was founded in 1952, with the purpose of producing wine for home consumption, by Artemis’ grandfather. In 2003, Artemis, using a family plot in the village of Exo Gonia, built the new current winery. While his background was in construction, being a native Santorinian, his passion and life experience with wine was always close. At first the attempts were halting with the wine making not distinguishing itself from the field. However, starting in the late teens a sea change began, with an overhaul in the winemaking to begin to produce wines with more distinction, conveying the world-class wines that Santorini is more than capable of. Experimentations followed, including extended skin contact Assyrtiko, under the label Mysterio, and attempts to capture the terroir of specific village locations with the singe-village bottlings of Louroi Platia (Pyrgos), Ftelos (Fira), Kamaras (Akrotiri) and Papas (Megalochori). Karamolegos holds the position of being one of 3 main wineries in Santorini with the most access to sourced fruit due to the family’s extensive ties in the farming community. This helps guarantee a fruit source for their wines while the total yields in Santorini keep falling, and while total vineyard acreage continues to dwindle due to commercial development. Their winemaking facilities offer a large underground cellar where various vessels are used in production including amphorae, tanks, and barrels of various sizes for fermentation and ageing. Individual parcels are handles and fermented separately, allowing them to show there own character, from which the blended Santorinis like “Koulara,” and “34” are made.
