A Legacy Reborn: The Wine of Pella Ancient Roots: Located in northern Greece, Pella has been celebrated since antiquity as "the mother of wine." It is a region steeped in viticultural history, famously inspiring the tragic poet Euripides to write his wine-centric play, Bacchae, and even prompting the building of a 19th-century church using wine-infused mortar. The Modern Revival: Although disease and agricultural shifts temporarily halted production in the 20th century, Thomas Ligas revived Pella’s winemaking legacy in 1985. Combining French oenological training with a deep respect for the local ecosystem, Ligas sought to bring out the authentic qualities of the Pella terroir. Beyond Organic Farming: The Ligas Estate utilizes a gentle, natural approach to viticulture that goes beyond traditional organic farming. By keeping the nutrient-rich, well-drained loamy soil fluffy and intact, they allow a vibrant ecosystem to thrive, balancing the development of the vines naturally without harsh intervention. The Craft: Hand-harvested between August and September, the estate grows distinct local varieties: Roditis, Assyrtiko, and Kydonitsa (whites), alongside Xinomavro and Limniona (reds). Minimal Intervention: In the winery, modern equipment meets artisan expertise. Technical processing is kept to a absolute minimum to preserve the grapes' original characteristics, and red wines are matured in oak casks and underground cellars to deliver a naturally balanced, premium product.
