Nikos Stathoglou, owner and proprietor of Moinoterra, one of the newest wineries in Crete, comes from a local family in the appellation of Artchanes. Using his family vineyards planted with Kotsifali and Mandilaria, the two varieties that comprise the makup of the appellated wines or Archanes, he seeks to make classic, elegant versions of the historically rustic region. Μoinoterra means "the land of Minos" ( King of ancient Knossos and Moinoan civilization, which contains the oino(wine), and in fact the winery sits a relative stone's throw away from the ancient palace of Knossos, with its over 4000 year history of wine.
